Increasing Learning Power (ILP)

Finally we have something that re-gains our focus on the children as effective learners – not just how teachers teach. This has really inspired me as a headteacher to look at how teachers should facilitate learning as opposed to simply believing they need to ‘teach’

Heateacher, Plymouth 2012

Our Increasing Learning Power (ILP) programme inspires and resources leaders, teachers and students to maximise their potential as learners and achieve more. It does this by helping them:

  • identify just what it is that makes a powerful and effective lifelong learner as identified through extensive research at the University of Bristol - see the video clip Seven Dimensions of Learning Power  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N6tgM7bL4c
  • measure, explore and reflect on individual  and group learning power using the research validated Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) profile
  • develop strategies to increase learning power at an individual, whole class and/or organisational level
Who is this for:

The ILP programme is effective for all phases of education from Early Years to Further Education. ILP is also a good leadership project for aspiring leaders.

What are the benefits:

ILP through ELLI shows improvement in attainment and achievement across many areas for example:

  • increasing engagement in learning
  • improving behaviour, attitudes and learning relationships
  • developing pupil self-assessment
  • creating a learning curriculum
  • challenging able and very able students to maximise their potential
  • re-engaging disengaged students
  • increasing effectiveness as independent learners
  • developing mental health and emotional well-being
  • preparing for university
  • developing active citizenship
  • diagnosing and addressing underachievement
  • helping parents and learning coaches know how to support students to achieve
  • strengthening resilience and resourcefulness
How is it delivered:

To develop ILP in your school, two or more members of staff need to be accredited to use ELLI and become Champions for ILP. The programme includes:

  • an initial consultation to discuss your needs
  • a two day workshop to equip staff to
    • understand the background and findings of the research into learning power
    • interpret the ELLI profile and use a coaching approach when supporting others
    • devise strategies to increase learning power for individuals and whole group level
    • create an action plan to lead ILP in your school/setting
  • materials to support the development of ILP within your school/setting
  • half a day of follow up support after the workshop
What does it cost:

Please contact maria@bestpracticenet.co.uk to discuss the cost of training your Champions and ILP coaching.
