Stronger Governance

The majority of governing bodies are committed to further improvement (Ofsted, 2011).  The new inspection framework (from January 2012) has a stronger focus on the role of governors in ensuring that schools improve.  When carrying out their self-evaluation Governing bodies often ask two important questions:

  • What does outstanding governance look like?
  • How, as a Governing Body, can we ensure that we provide exceptional leadership?

Best Practice Network provides support that strengthens governance. We make extensive use of the Stronger Governance systems programme which exemplifies 'what good looks like' and enables governing bodies to drive their own performance and to become outstanding.

Stronger Governance Systems is the key programme developed by the DfE in collaboration with the National Governors' Association. It is designed to help governors better fulfil their strategic role in relation to school improvement.

Who is this for:

Governing Bodies looking to continue to make further improvements in outcomes for all of the children and young people in their school.  This programme will support Governing Bodies in a climate of reducing budgets, increasing accountability and changing national expectations.

What are the benefits:

This programme will:

  • support governors in their strategic role in school improvement
  • promote high standards and children's well-being and ensure the quality of provision
  • provide professional development and broader networking and support opportunities
  • establish ongoing professional partnership to promote and sustain improvement
How is it delivered:

The core package includes a minimum of six hours of expert facilitation and training which is used flexibly to create a bespoke solution that reflects your school's individual needs.  For example, we can arrange a discrete twilight training package matched to your needs.

A typical training session will last about two hours.  Where two or more schools work together, we will agree a reduced cost.  We also offer induction support and an ongoing coaching and mentoring service for chairs and new governors.
