EYPS validation pathway case study: Kathy Kilner
My name is Kathy Kilner, and I am on the validation pathway, with the Hull group, tutor Ann Littlewood.
I had my setting visit yesterday, so all I can do now is wait until June when everything has been moderated.
I live in North Lincs, but work in Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
I manage a college day nursery for children from 3 months to five years of age.
I decided to do EYPS because I am a qualified teacher, but for primary children aged 7-11,
and although I have worked in nurseries for the past ten years, I had never been assessed in this area.
In a sense, I valued the idea of having my practice validated not only for future employers, but for me.
I had very little idea of what it would entail, but have really enjoyed the complete experience,
and have gained far more from it than I ever imagined I would.
My tutor was excellent, what I term a real person. Nothing was too much trouble for her,
and we could phone or e-mail her at any time with any queries. I found day one the hardest,
taking it all in when I has been away from formal training for years, and when Ann showed me that confidence tree,
and asked where I was in it, I didn't like to tell her that I barely made the first branch.
I wasn't on line at that point either, and I could have given up. How glad I am that I didn't,
I have learnt such a lot about myself, and how I work with others. Blow your own trumpet,
be proud of what you do, we were told. I have never been able to do that, but in three short months I am a different person.
I attacked the standards and began writing tasks before day two, and became more and more reflective and confident.
My setting had achieved three outstanding and two good grades at our latest Ofsted inspection, but I was still pro-active and working at getting better, and I really believe that the course has furthered this hunger in me to improve outcomes for the children.
I will actively encourage others to become EYPs.
I have already booked my deputy on to a level four course in preparation for this, and to help her further her career.
As for how I will use the status, I told Ann, that I went for an interview in October, and almost got the job. I am certain that I would stand a much better chance now. I am more aware of my capabilities, and after the Gateway Review, an interview and presentation will be a breeze! I was probably capable of doing the job before the course, but I didn't believe I was. I now realise that it is not being big headed saying , I can do my job well, and it doesn't mean that I will rest on my laurels either, as I now want to do so much more. I am really interested in working with less experienced practitioners and helping them move on, but do not want to move to a post where I can never be hands on, as I need that contact with the children to keep in touch.
Best Practice have been very good, professional throughout, excellent materials, and friendly, helpful staff. Each time I have contacted the office, my enquiry has been quickly and efficiently dealt with.
My thanks to you all.
