Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Status Resources
"It actually changed me as a
person, giving me the confidence to use my initiative. It also altered my relationship with teachers in the school, giving them more
confidence in my ability to support them in the classroom."
Information for HLTA Candidates
Best Practice Network have compiled a list of HLTA Candidate's Frequently Asked Questions which you may find useful.
HLTA Task Forms F0-10 are a series of worksheets to help you
structure your responses to the four written assessment tasks,
including an assessment grid to record your evidence of how you meet
the
2007 HLTA standards.
The above downloads are all Microsoft Word formatted documents, and as
such it is not possible to use them
with Notepad or Wordpad. If you do not have access to
Microsoft Word you can
download and install StarOffice or OpenOffice,
both of which can open and save Microsoft Word formatted documents (Star Office is available as a 90
day trial, after that time you will need to purchase a licence to continue using it).
Best Practice Network has developed a needs analysis tool to enable teaching assistants to review their professional practice and identify their strengths, interests and development needs in order to establish appropriate activities to achieve HLTA status. The clear and easy-to-use booklet is based around 8 key themes, all of which represent integral parts of teaching assistants’ daily work. The themes, which reflect the HLTA standards, are:
- Literacy and numeracy
- Planning and preparation of lessons
- Supporting pupils to access learning opportunities
- Communicating with pupils, colleagues and parents/carers
- Your knowledge of specialisms, strategies and policies
- Working with pupils in different contexts
- Assessment and monitoring pupils’ progress
- Improving your professional practice
TAs can identify immediately which areas may need further work. By reviewing these strengths and areas for development, school leaders and local authorities can make informed decisions about how to help staff move forward in their development and achieve HLTA status.
