ILM Level 3 Award in Workplace Coaching for Team Leaders and First Line Managers

As the title suggests – this is ideal for Team Leaders and First Line Managers and it provides them with the knowledge, skills and confident to perform effectively as a workplace coach as part of their normal work role. The Award is appropriate therefore for anyone who has this responsibility to coach others within their role and does have some team members directly reporting to them, either on a permanent or on a ‘task’ basis

Best Practice Network offers this programme over a 6 month period. This consists of 3 interactive workshop days, and a period of tutor supported self learning via an on line module and completion of the accreditation requirements. Topics covered include:

  • Understanding good practice in workplace coaching
  • Organising workplace coaching
  • Undertaking supervised coaching in the workplace

All candidates are required to submit a work-based assignment for assessment purposes. This aim of the assignment at this level is to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to plan workplace coaching and assessed their personal communication skills to perform effectively as a workplace coach. Skills and knowledge to contribute towards the assignment will be developed on the workshops and through the online learning module, and the sections of the assignment are outlined below:-

  • Ensuring good practice in coaching
  • Indentifying learning styles and barriers to learning
  • Support for coaching and recording outcomes
  • Personal strengths and weaknesses in coaching skills

Additionally, candidates are required to complete a Coaching Diary, showing the planning and undertaking of a minimum of 6 hours of workplace coaching and reflections on the effectiveness of coaching activity

ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring Management

This programme is aimed at practising managers at middle management level, who require the knowledge skills and confidence to perform effectively as coaches or mentors as part of their normal work role. This Certificate will therefore benefit anyone who has this responsibility to mentor or coach, with accountability for the performance of all those over which they have control; either direct or indirect. These managers would normally be budget holders, with a responsibility for allocating some resources within defined boundaries, but are less likely to hold strategic responsibilities.

Best Practice Network offers this programme over a 9 month period. This consists of 4 interactive workshop days, and a period of tutor supported self learning via an on line module and completion of the accreditation requirements. Topics covered include:

  • Understanding how management coaching and mentoring can benefit individuals and the organisation
  • Reviewing personal ability as a management coach or mentor
  • Undertaking management coaching or mentoring in the workplace

All candidates are required to submit a work-based assignment for assessment purposes. This aim of the assignment at this level is to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to prepare a proposal for a management mentoring or coaching programme in their workplace and to show they would ensure best practice. Skills and knowledge to contribute towards the assignment will be developed on the workshops and through the online learning module, and the sections of the assignment are outlined below:-

  • Ensuring best practice in coaching or mentoring
  • Strategies to overcome barriers to mentoring and coaching
  • Preparation of a business case for using coaching or mentoring in the workplace
  • Suggestions regarding how the effectiveness of mentoring and coaching could be evaluated

Additionally, candidates are required to complete a Coaching Diary, showing an assessment of their won strengths and weaknesses as a mentor / coach; the planning and undertaking of a minimum of 12 hours of workplace coaching and reflections on personal performance as a mentor / coach

ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring

This programme is aimed at practising senior managers and leaders, or those working in a training and development role, who require the knowledge skills and confidence to perform effectively as coaches or mentors as part of their normal work role. This Certificate will therefore benefit anyone who has this responsibility to mentor or coach, with senior strategic or operational management responsibility. The likelihood is that participants will have wide spans of control, full budgetary accountability for their area of responsibility, and they will have members of middle management reporting directly to them. These managers will often report directly to board members or elected members of a public authority, and they may in fact be members of such a board.

Best Practice Network offers this programme over a 12 month period. This consists of 5 interactive workshop days, a period of tutor supported self learning via an on line module, a 1:1 skills development and feedback visit at the candidates workplace, and completion of the accreditation requirements. Topics covered include:

  • Critically reviewing the role of the leadership mentor or executive coach in developing leadership performance
  • Critically reviewing own ability to perform effectively as a leadership mentor or executive coach
  • Undertaking leadership mentoring or executive coaching in the workplace

All candidates are required to submit a work-based assignment for assessment purposes. This aim of the assignment at this level is to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to prepare a proposal for a leadership mentoring or executive coaching programme in their workplace and to show how they can support development of leadership capability through this process. Skills and knowledge to contribute towards the assignment will be developed on the workshops and through the online learning module, and the sections of the assignment are outlined below:-

  • The contribution of leadership mentoring and executive coaching in developing leadership performance – including evaluation of alternative strategies for developing leaders
  • Personal commitment to leadership mentoring and executive coaching – including a critical review of skills and behaviours of the mentor / coach and the conditions for effective mentoring / coaching

Additionally, candidates are required to complete a detailed Reflective Review and Coaching Diary, showing an critical review of a minimum of 12 hours leadership mentoring and executive coaching planned and undertaken, alongside future plans to learn and develop as a leadership mentor or coach, and contributions to ongoing development of leadership capability.
