What is the NPQ for Leading Teaching (NPQLT)?

The National Professional Qualification for Leading Teaching (NPQLT) is a DfE-accredited qualification.

The NPQLT is designed for individuals who currently hold, or are harbouring aspirations to assume, leadership roles in teaching, whether it be in a particular subject, year group, key stage, or educational phase.

Coupled with a comprehensive blend of learning methods, including Face-to-Face events, performance coaching, and enrichment activities, the NPQLT offers an invaluable learning experience.

What will you learn on the NPQ for Leading Teaching (NPQLT)?

The NPQLT is designed to equip teachers with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to lead the development of behaviour and culture. There are four cycles, including the introduction cycle, focusing on:

  • Teaching Foundations and Principles
  • Professional Learning
  • Leading Teaching
  • Building Culture and Ethos

Who should apply for the NPQLT?

The NPQLT is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase.

They often directly manage a team of teachers and their work is focussed on supporting effective teaching across the school.

If you are passionate about leading teaching across your school, we encourage you to apply.

"I would like to express how delighted we are as a school with the NPQ programme so far. I have two members of staff participating and the skills and knowledge they have gained so far is incredible."

Rebecca Lyon | Headteacher | Barkston & Syston CoE Primary School

How is NPQLT delivered?

The NPQLT is delivered through a mixture of Face-to-Face events, online study, webinars and coaching.

The leadership mentor is a participant’s main point of contact for the duration of the NPQLT. Our leadership mentors are experienced teachers and leaders who are experts in our programme curriculum. They understand first-hand the challenges teachers experience in work life. Their role is to support a participant's progress and development through the programme. They support you by:

  • Providing advice and feedback throughout the programme
  • Marking and responding to all of your practice task activities completed for each online course
  • Providing you with feedback on each of the Formative Assessment Tasks following their completion

Our Leadership Mentors apply flexibility and are accountable to ensure success on your programme. With the above responsibilities, their main role and purpose is to help you manage your workload and ensure work life balance as much as possible whilst studying with us.

At the end of the programme, in conjunction with their mentor and in-school performance coach, participants will evaluate the impact of the programme on their leadership development and the benefits to their school.

The in-school performance coach, nominated by the participant’s school, will offer support, guidance and challenge to a participant through six planned coaching sessions. They will provide feedback following their completion of formative assessment tasks and monitor and support participant progress through the programme. At the end of the programme, in conjunction with their mentor and in-school performance coach, participants will evaluate the impact of the programme on their leadership development and the benefits to their school. See the In-School Performance Coach (ISPC) Handbook for more information.
