An Early Years Special Educational Needs Coordinator (EYSENCO) plays a key role in identifying and supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). They work closely with families and professionals to make sure children receive the right support, helping to secure the best possible outcomes in their early development and learning.

Early Years SENCO Level 3 Overview

This is an NCFE Level 3 Qualification for SENCOs in Early Years settings.

All Early Years providers are required to have arrangements in place to identify and support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and to promote equality of opportunity for children in their care, as set out in the EYFS Framework.

This qualification meets the requirements of the EYFS Framework providing Early Years SENCOs with the knowledge, understanding and skills to support children and their families. This programme is accredited and fully-funded by the DfE. 

Best Practice Network has been allocated 9,500 funded places by the DfE over the 2026 to 2028 period. These places will be prioritised in line with the DfE’s guidance of the greatest need and impact. Please apply via our website through the link above.

 

Am I eligible for Early Years SENCO Level 3?


The Level 3 Early Years SENCO qualification is for:

  • Level 3 educators in private, voluntary or independent settings (PVIs)
  • Ofsted-registered Childminders
  • Childminders registered with a Childminding Agency (CMA)

To apply, you must have either:

  • A full and relevant Level 3 or above qualification (check here: https://check-an-early-years-qualification.service.gov.uk/)
  • Childminders are eligible if they hold a full and relevant Early Years Level 2 qualification, have completed at least one Early Years Level 3 training module and have significant experience working in Early Years

What are the benefits?

Completing the Early Years SENCO qualification ensures that children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) get the support they deserve. Participants learn how to:

  • Understand statutory guidance and legislation relating to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Understand the four areas of need and give examples of the difficulties associated with each
  • Network with a community of practice
  • Explain how to actively engage the child and the child’s parents/carers in the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process
  • Explain the role of the early years practitioner/key worker and that of the SENCO within the cycle
  • Explain what an effective support plan should include and why clear outcomes are important

On completion of the programme, graduates will receive a NCFE certificate as well as a Best Practice Network lanyard and badge!

As a setting, you will also be given digital banners and a Best Practice Network certificate to proudly display your EY SENCO certified status.

How is it delivered?

The Level 3 Early Years SENCO qualification is delivered over 6 months through Online Taught Sessions and Online Study Units.

The Online Taught Sessions are 2 hours long with an optional, additional hour for tutor-led support. The sessions consist of live tutor-led training, incorporating breakout room activities, group discussion and group training. Participants can choose to complete the Online Taught Sessions on either weekday mornings, afternoons or evenings. There will also be a number of Saturday sessions available for childminders only.

The Online Study Units are delivered through the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment. Login details and induction training will be provided before the programme starts.

To undertake the Level 3 Early Years SENCO qualification:

  • You must be working as an Early Years SENCO, or due to take up the role of Early Years SENCO
  • You must hold a full and relevant Level 3 or above qualification (check here: https://check-an-early-years-qualification.service.gov.uk/
  • Childminders are eligible if they hold a full and relevant Early Years Level 2 qualification, have completed at least one Level 3 Early Years training module and have significant experience working in Early Years
  • You must be working in an Early Years setting and have the support of your employer, or be an Ofsted-registered Childminder or be registered with a Childminder agency

The DfE has allocated a limited number of funded places and set out the eligibility criteria for the candidates to maximise the impact of the funding. Please submit your application and one of our consultants will advise you on the following steps. Alternatively, you can contact us for more information.

The Level 3 Early Years SENCO qualification is fully-funded by the DfE for SENCos, or those due to take up the role of SENCO, working in private, voluntary or independent early years settings, Ofsted-registered Childminders and Childminder agencies.

Please note that we have been allocated 9,500 funded places by the DfE over the 2026 to 2028 period. To be eligible, the candidates must meet the criteria outlined by the DfE.

At the moment, we are unable to accept self-funded applications.
