What to expect in Module 1

What to expect in Module 1

As a new teacher beginning your career, the Early Career Framework can feel overwhelming. To help you get started, we have pulled together an overview of what Module 1 consists of. This will give you a clear understanding of the learning objectives and what you can expect to achieve from the first module of the programme.

Start of the Module

Module 1 is the very first piece of learning on the Early Career Framework.  The recommended time to complete this module is 7 weeks. In this module, Early Career Teachers will explore strategies for establishing and maintaining a supportive learning environment in which all pupils can thrive. They will get the chance to observe colleagues’ practice and have multiple opportunities to script and rehearse strategies to use with their pupils.

The module begins with a Module Audit for Early Career Teachers to self-review against the module standards. ECTs will discuss with their Mentor how they will work collaboratively to ensure ECTs maximise their learning throughout this programme.

What is the theme of Module 1?

Module 1 of the Early Career Framework (ECF) addresses Teachers’ Standard 1: Set high expectations and Teachers' Standard 7: Manage behaviour effectively. Standard 8: Fulfil wider professional responsibilities runs throughout all modules.

In this Module, introduced through the regional training event, Early Career Teachers (ECTs) will explore various topics, including understanding the importance of teachers as role models and how to establish an effective learning environment.

Module 1 Topics

Understanding teachers as role models

The first topic in this Module focuses on teachers as role models and addresses teachers' standards 1 and 7. In this module, Early Career Teachers will observe a colleague's lesson and focus on observing entry routines. During their meetings with their Mentor, ECTs should be able to discuss their school's routines and values. Following this, they should be able to create their own scripted entry routines to use in their classrooms.

Establishing the learning environment

In this topic, ECTs will undertake a practical exercise to analyse challenges and opportunities in establishing the learning environment, this will involve observing a colleague for 10 minutes. They will get the chance to apply their learning to their practice in context. With the guidance of their Mentor, ECTs will develop and practice strategies to implement an effective learning environment.

Supporting the most vulnerable children

This topic will be one of the key areas of the regional training event which will focus on ways to support pupils and scripting for a more inclusive learning environment. In Mentor sessions, ECTs will be able to reflect on their regional training event as well as collaborate on best practices around communicating with parents, carers and colleagues.

Understanding pupils as learners

This topic is a chance for Early Career Teachers to explore and reflect on their pupils' resilience, self-regulation and motivation. They will be able to plan opportunities to improve this within their classrooms and identify pupils.

Managing behaviour

This Topic focuses on exercises to reflect on tricky episodes of behaviour and practical solutions to manage behaviour. Within their Mentor sessions, ECTs will bring vignettes to analyse. This is a chance for ECTs to discuss and collaborate with their Mentors ahead of their upcoming developmental observation which will happen the following week.

Exploring yourself as a role model

ECTs will reflect on their understanding of themselves as role models and what they've learnt from the Induction Conference and regional training events. Mentors will use this topic to reflect on the quality of Mentoring provided and ECT progress. Mentors will arrange to observe their ECTs for 20 minutes in their classroom setting to experience the module content being put into practice.

Outcomes of Module 1

This module finishes with a developmental lesson observation by the Mentor so that ECTs can get support and feedback on their progress. Following this module, ECTs should be able to establish a learning environment, manage behaviour effectively and understand themselves as role models for their pupils.
