Whether you are supporting an early career teaching assistant, building SEND capacity in your school or developing an experienced member of staff into a specialist role, these pathways help you align training to the needs of your pupils and team.

Apprenticeship pathways

Starting point

Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Level 3

If you are developing a teaching assistant in your school, this is the strongest starting point. It builds confidence in classroom support, safeguarding and pupil progress so they can contribute more effectively day to day.

  • 15 to 18-month programme that fits around their role in your setting
  • Blended delivery with live online sessions and one-to-one tutor support
  • Specialist options aligned to your school priorities
  • Creates a clear progression route for your support staff
Level 3 with SEND focus

Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Level 3 with SEND

If you want to strengthen SEND support in your setting, this pathway builds the same Level 3 foundation while giving your staff more confidence in supporting pupils with additional needs.

  • Core Teaching Assistant Level 3 apprenticeship
  • Focused SEND development relevant to your classroom context
  • An additional SEND certificate alongside the apprenticeship
  • Supports inclusive practice across your school
Advanced pathway

Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Level 5

If you have experienced staff in your school who are ready to go further, this pathway helps them take on a more specialist role and have a wider impact across your provision.

  • 18-month programme designed around real practice in your setting
  • Specialist pathways including SEND, wellbeing and curriculum
  • Supports targeted intervention and wider school impact
  • Builds capability beyond day-to-day classroom support
Progression from Level 3

What schools need to know before choosing a pathway

Delivery in your setting

These programmes combine live online learning, one-to-one tutor support, independent study and workplace application so staff can continue contributing in school while developing in their role.

Employer involvement

Your school will need to support off-the-job training, provide mentor or line manager input, allow time for scheduled learning and stay involved in regular reviews so progress remains strong.

Why this matters

This is more than a qualification choice. It is a workforce development decision that can strengthen classroom support, grow specialist expertise and create clearer progression in your team.

Level 5 specialist pathways for schools ready to go further

If you are investing in an experienced member of staff, the Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 apprenticeship lets you align their development to the type of provision you want to strengthen in your setting.

SEND

For schools that want deeper specialist expertise supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

Social and Emotional Wellbeing

For settings looking to strengthen emotional support, inclusion and targeted intervention around mental health and wellbeing.

Curriculum Provision

For schools that want to build specialist support in areas such as EAL, early reading, maths, forest school or subject specific intervention.

How we support your school and apprentice

Learning is planned around the realities of school life, with a blended model that supports progress without removing staff from their role.

From core classroom support to SEND, wellbeing and curriculum provision, you can choose a route that reflects the pressures and priorities in your setting.

Employer FAQs

What is the difference between Level 3 and Level 5?

Level 3 is usually the strongest starting point for staff building classroom support, knowledge and skills. Level 5 is for experienced staff who are ready to specialise further and contribute more widely across provision in your school.

Is the SEND route separate from Level 3?

No. The SEND route is a specialist version of the Teaching Assistant Level 3 apprenticeship. It keeps the same Level 3 foundation while building stronger SEND knowledge and confidence.

What does our school need to provide?

Your school will need to support off-the-job training, provide mentor or line manager input, allow time for virtual sessions and learning activity and stay engaged in regular reviews throughout the programme.

 How is the programme funded?

For many schools and trusts, these programmes can be funded through the apprenticeship levy. Co-funding and levy transfer may also be available depending on your circumstances.

Can Level 3 lead to HLTA?

Yes. Once a member of staff completes Level 3, they can fast track towards HLTA, giving your school a practical progression route into higher level classroom support.

What are the progression routes after Level 5?

Progression may include moving towards HLTA status or considering teacher training routes where that fits the goals of the individual and your setting.
