Case study: Year 1 ECT

Case study: Year 1 ECT

The Early Career Framework has been designed with the Early Career Teacher (ECT) in mind, to support them in developing the skills and confidence needed to flourish in the classroom.

Designed to follow seamlessly from Initial Teacher Training, the 2-year fully funded induction programme gives ECTs structured support based on the Early Career Framework and additionally provides for the training of in-school mentors.

Ashley Mills, Teacher at Chantry Primary Academy and current ECF participant, explains how the Early Career Framework has aided her in her first years in the classroom

Q: What stage are you in the Early Career Framework?

I've just completed my first year of the Early Career Framework and will shortly be starting my second year as an ECT.

Q: What has been your experience of the Early Career Framework so far?

It's been really useful, building on what we've learnt in our Initial Teacher Training (ITT) and I've used lots of the case studies and talked about them with my Early Career Mentor (ECM). It helped with my planning, my behaviour management and how I can set my classroom up. Its been useful as well to talk to other ECTs about their experience and know that I have my Mentor there.

Q: How are you applying the Early Career Framework in your teaching?

I'm applying my learning when it comes to assessments and stretching those who are more able than others, I've had conversations with my Mentor and the Early Career Framework has really helped that.  Also the children with SEND and what strategies I can use in the classroom to help them.

Q: What has been your favourite part of the programme?

My favourite part of the programme has been the Face-to-Face events, having the chance to talk to other ECTS and also having dedicated time with my Mentor. The biscuits at the events are great too!

Q: What is your relationship like with your Early Career Mentor?

My mentor is Louisa North,  she is now our phase lead for Year 3 and Year 4. She's amazing and has been teaching for a really long time. Louisa has taken on the role of nurturing me and challenging me when needed.
