Headteacher Programme Learner Story

Headteacher Programme Learner Story

We spoke with Sam Stevenson, a learner on the Headteacher Programme with NPQH, to gain insights into her experience. Discover how the programme not only prepared her for headship but significantly shaped her career, from developing ethical leadership skills to navigating the challenges of a new role.

Could you tell us a little about yourself, your role, and your experience with the programme?

Of course! I started the programme about 18 months ago when I was a deputy head. At the time, I wasn’t necessarily looking to become a headteacher but wanted to explore the possibility. I chose Best Practice Network and decided to do the apprenticeship alongside the NPQH. The first unit on ethical leadership was a real eye-opener. It helped me understand myself better and clarified what I wanted in my career. Shortly after, I applied for headteacher roles and secured my first headship within two months. I started the new role, the apprenticeship, and the NPQH all at once—a challenging but rewarding experience.

How did the programme support your transition to a new role while still studying?

The transition was seamless. Best Practice Network handled the administrative aspects, so I didn’t have to worry about funding or paperwork. The ethical leadership module gave me the tools and confidence to not only apply for roles but also to succeed in the interviews. It was life-changing, as it helped me move from a role where I was unhappy to one where I truly thrive.

What was your favourite aspect of the programme?

The Face-to-Face sessions were fantastic. The group was great, and the tutors, particularly Debs, were incredible. We formed a WhatsApp group that’s still active, which has been invaluable for support and networking. The Face-to-Face sessions also gave me a chance to learn from other aspiring and current leaders.

How did the coaching element of the programme impact your journey?

Debs, my coach, was brilliant. She was always available, even beyond our scheduled meetings. When I started the programme, my headteacher left, and I had to step up in a school of 700 children without much support. Debs was understanding and kept me on track despite the challenges. She provided guidance and helped me make the right decisions at critical moments.

How did you find the online elements of the programme?

Initially, I wasn’t a fan of the online platforms, but I came to appreciate their simplicity and functionality. Canvas was user-friendly and easy to navigate. It was manageable, especially as I could integrate my learning with my daily work.

The programme includes off-the-job training as part of the apprenticeship. How did you manage this aspect alongside your role as a headteacher?

It was manageable because I integrated the training into my work. For example, if I attended a meeting or webinar that linked to my learning, I included it as part of my off-the-job training. I also made sure to set aside dedicated time by organising my calendar, which was essential for balancing everything. Support from my governors was crucial, as they encouraged me to take time off-site to focus on my development. Overall, the apprenticeship was designed to align with what I was already doing, so it didn’t feel like extra work.

Why did you choose Best Practice Network over other providers?

It was a combination of positive reviews and word of mouth. I’d heard mixed things about other providers, but Best Practice stood out. Now, having completed the programme, I’m the one recommending them to others.

Were there specific modules or lessons that had a significant impact on your leadership?

Ethical leadership was transformative, as it made me reassess my career and gave me the confidence to pursue headship. The finance module was also eye-opening, teaching me to think strategically rather than just being a doer. Overall, the programme provided a strong theoretical foundation that complemented my practical experience.

How have the skills you gained influenced your role as a headteacher?

The programme reinforced the importance of aligning actions with school priorities and focusing on evidence-based practices. It has helped me shift the school’s culture from a more directive leadership style to one that emphasises distributed leadership. This has empowered my team and improved implementation across the board.

What advice would you give to others considering the apprenticeship?

Plan your time well and ensure you integrate the off-the-job training with your daily responsibilities. For example, I aligned my training with school initiatives to avoid duplicating work. It’s also essential to have support from your governors or leadership team to create space for your development.

What’s next for you now that you’ve completed the programme?

For now, I’m focusing on my current role and giving my school 100%. While I said I wouldn’t study again, who knows? It’s hard to stop once you start! Right now, I’m enjoying the opportunity to put everything I’ve learned into practice.
